so scary!
I began my duties as the cleaning lady of the house today. I dusted the whole house and made my way up to my floor to clean my room, and all of a sudden the carbon monoxide detector starts going off!!! I freaked out and called my Mom and she told me she would come home from work, and to just stay calm. A few minutes later she told me she was about 10 minutes away and to call 911 and have the fire department come over. I grabbed Socks, and put her in my mom’s room so she wouldn’t get scared and run out the door with the fire department came.
Calling 911 was really nervewracking but I stayed very calm.
911: 911 What’s your location?
Me: [insert here]
911: And your phone number
Me: [insert here]
911: And what’s your emergency?
Me: The carbon monoxide detector in my house is going off, and I’m not sure why and I want to know if someone can come and check it out.
911: Is anyone else in the house?
Me: No, it’s just me.
911: Are you feeling sick or having trouble breathing?
Me: No
911: Are you fully awake?
Me: Yes!
911: Ok, we’re sending someone over, so I recommend you wait outside
And at this point I stood outside in my rainbow pajamas and coat, and the fire truck came, and so did three fire fighters. They asked me where the detector was and went to find it and then had me come inside, meanwhile my Mom pulled up and came in as well. The three of the fire fighters were so nice and showed us that a beep every 30 seconds means an error, while 4 fast beeps over and over again mean a danger. He also told us to simply change the batteries and see how that works for us.
I felt bad calling for almost no reason at all, but they checked the whole house and there was “not a drop of CO in the house.” Thank God! They told me it’s always better to call because they’d rather have to come for “a check” than have someone not call and it be a big problem. These people really are America’s heroes! They were so nice and helpful. And that was my morning!

That must have been scary, but I am glad that nothing was wrong. I am sure that the fire men are called out all the time for things like that.
LaurenOh wow, I would have been pretty freaked out myself. But I have never had any sort of alarm–fire or CO one–goes off except for when somebody accidentally took a few drags of a cigarette near a smoke alarm in my friend’s house. Lol. Well, it’s good that nothing was wrong.. I would have felt like a dumbass, too… like a coward, mostly, Haha. But at least everything is fine and nothing was risked.
♥ KI think I would have freaked out, too. It’s a good thing you called b/c it’s a lot better to be safe than sorry. That’s cool that they were really nice, too. XD
Jenn~Wow! That’s crazy! I’m glad everything is alright, I would have freaked out too!
HollyHA HA AW! Christine *hugs*, you’re so adorable! I would’ve react the same way as you. except worse (like crying and trying to save every animal in the house). Despite it being a false alarm, you did the right thing, just like he said. Thank goodness it wasn’t real! I wonder if I have one of those in my house?? I didn’t even know they existed.
It does help when you have really nice people during times like that. Usually they are very nice and understanding and I’m glad they treated you that way and not the other :/ I love how you stood outside with your rainbow pjs ha ha! PRICELESS!
BrandiThat’s happened to me too and it totally freaked me out! But firefighters are really nice about this kind of stuff usually. At least you know now though!
AngelaOh my gosh, I would of freaked out too! lol. Thank goodness everything is ok though!
AmberGoodness! Well atleast It was nothing but I’m glad they were nice about it =)
ShellieI know just how scary that is. My grandma had her CO detector beeping in her house and she called us first. We called the fire department for her, while my mom & dad went over to her house - which is about a 15-20 minute drive. They showed up and there wasn’t any in her house either… it was just an error, such as yours. We were worried though, because they’re elderly people, and CO affects them bad since their immunity isn’t so great. Know what I mean? So yeah, it was scary for us as I’m sure it was for them. It is better to call, JUST IN CASE though. Glad you’re okay.
TiffanyWe had a Carbon Monoxide scare in our old house. Something seemed really “wrong”, so we had our house checked out, and tested for Carbon Monoxide. Came out positive
But, we had it all straightened out, got ourselves a detector.
Glad they were really nice and helpful.
They’re our heros!
BrandyHah, I would’ve done the same exact thing. I’ve called the police before, because I thought there was someone in my backyard, and it ends up being nothing. I seem to make things worse for myself when I’m hone alone really late at night. lol.
Kyle Dylan ConnerI would’ve reacted the same way. Carbon Monoxide is dangerous and it’s good that you acted this way too. You didn’t know what to do so it’s good that you got help. This is a just-in-case situation like Tiffany said. Those fire fighters were nice too ^^.
I had no clue that’s what those beeps mean. I probably won’t remember too… but yeah, you’re alright. That’s all that counts.
MihorielIts good that you called. You always need to make sure its nothing bad. Good thing it was nothing serious.
Alexoh dude! that’s quite some story! i’m glad everything is okay though! phew! i used to watch Rescue Me about the FDNY… and i gotta ask… were the fire fighters hot?
CielYay
nothing wrong!
The same thing goes with a fire alarm too. If it goes off once in a while it’s almost dead, constantly… well… LOL. >_
CynthiaOMG i would of been freaking the f%$* out! I am so paranoid about things like that. I’m glad it was only the batteries and nothing was wrong. Fire fighters are amazing and so hot in their uniforms =D I dated one before i met Jason.
ChristineMy carbon monoxide alarm is always beeping too.. maybe I should start paying attention to it. =S
KatyWow I would have totally freaked!! I would have done the exact same thing as you. Generally fire fighters are cool about that stuff and they are happy that you are safe and that nothing is wrong, they would never be happy if there really was carbon monoxide in your house. I’m glad that you are safe and sound!!
NicoleOH gosh, I would have been so scared. I am glad that there was no carbon monoxide in your house though. That stuff is so freaking dangerous!
Firemen are definitely heroes!
