NYC’s Sex Museum

I’m always heading up to NYC since it’s a short hour and a half train ride away. I try to go a few times a year, and it’s usually a family affair. This time, Keith and I went solo to NYC’S Sex Museum. This was actually an extra credit project for my Human Sexuality class, and the first one I knew I wanted to do. The museum is right on 5th avenue, but in the opposite direction from the main shopping area. We arrived in NYC at around and 11 and walked right to the museum, and it was only a 25-30 minute walk.

The first floor was the main exhibit, “The Sex Lives of Animals.” The sculptures were pretty fascinating, but it was super text heavy. I’m a reader, but not when all the text is on the wall. Also did you know that there is homosexual and group sex in certain animal species? If not, you do now. I thought it was pretty interesting to point that out, but it was kind of overwhelming to see at first. Since Keith is the artist, he really enjoyed looking at the sculptures. They literally looked like they were floating. It was really great work.

The second floor was titled “Sex & The Moving Image” and it was great. There were tons of televisions, projections and even little booths to watch movies in, sort of like that strip club/lap dance feel. My favorite movie showing was the one of all the nude scenes from mainstream movies. There’s a ton of them! Seth Rogen’s character from “Knocked Up” would be proud!

The final exhibit was titled “The Sex Lives of Robots” but that was only a very small part of it. There was everything in this room from bondage to old school woman’s health tools. Did you also know that Vibrators were sold as “Beauty Aids” and looked like an old fashioned egg beater? Amazing! I especially liked looking at the books that taught children about sex. There was actually a book that Keith’s parents read to him as a child.

The only thing that truly bothered me was this latex suit, it looks sort of like the Real Dolls (I’m sure we all know what those are), but it’s a baggy suit that someone wears. It just looked creepy, and freaked me out, especially because it must get so damn hot in there, and I cannot stand being confined in something. So, it’s not for me, but do trust, I’m not dissing you latex lovers out there!

When they change the exhibits, I would definitely go again, it was certainly an experience. After the museum we stopped at Saks, Sephora, and grabbed lunch at Junior’s. Go there and have the onion rings, they’re amazing.

  1. Sounds like you had fun! I’ll have to go there someday. Whenever I can get back to NY. :D I had actually heard about homosexual animals. I know that male swans are sometimes. Sometimes a male will get a female pregnant then raise the baby with another male. I forgot where I heard about that. But it was very interesting.

  2. That sounds like a very interesting museum. I’ve never heard of a sex museum before. I hope it helped you out with your class assignment!

  4. I’ve wanted to go to the museum of sex for a while now. I should just get on the train and head into the city for a day.

  5. That sounds really interesting! Unfortunately I’m a bazillion miles away from NYC and will probably never get to see it, but maybe that’s for the best because I’d probably just embarrass myself there, lol. On the topic of interesting museums though, I’ve heard there’s a museum of phallology (the only one in the world, apparently) in Iceland. I imagine that attracts a lot of visitors too, hehe. Anyway, it sounds like you had fun, and yay for shopping too! We don’t have any of those stores in Australia, boooo. :(

  6. I’ve never had a chance to go to that kind of museum before and I don’t think we have anything like it here! It would be so cool if we did, though! Very interesting! Haha :)

  7. Interesting stuff. I think they had a traveling exhibit on the same topic a few years ago but I think I had to be 18 to go and I was just 17 at the time so I missed it!

  8. I didn’t even know that place existed! I’d have a heyday in that place for REAL. I think I remember reading somewhere that vibrators used to be marketed as “beauty aids.” I can’t tell if that’s because they were being discreet or because a woman generally does look happier (and prettier) after she’s um, had a good time. And eggbeater though, yeeeesh, that’s not gettin’ anywhere near my funzone.

  9. Funnnnn… lol.
Latex suits are really weird. I think it’s included in the whole BDSM fetish thing … I couldn’t imagine not being able to see though.

  10. That’s a really interesting museum to go to, because you sure do learn lots. I learned a bunch just from reading your tidbits of information. Haha, I don’t think I’d like vibrators that were like old fashioned eggbeaters. Ouch?

Btw, I changed sites. :] So change your link (textlies.org/attack) to this one.

  11. My best friend has been to New York a few times and always raves about the museums. I wish I didn’t live so far away!

  12. That museum sounds so neat! If I ever go to NY I’ll definitely have to check it out. It sounds so fun!

  13. Oh NYC, how I love you so. Even though you’re about 1600 miles away. *weeps*

  14. This is a place I would love to visit (not sarcastic). Do you think people ever go in there just to masturbate to the naked movie scenes?

  15. That is known that money can make us independent. But what to do when someone has no cash? The only one way is to try to get the loan and collateral loan.
