As an unemployed English teacher (this is what I’ve been calling myself as of now), I am obsessed with quotations and explaining them to death. I’m the teacher who will have you sit with three lines of Shakespeare and have the class discuss them for at least twenty minutes if not more. Yes, yes, I’m the teacher who will tell you that each word has relevance and will make you look up each word in the OED. (English majors, you’d better know and love the OED–for non-literary dorks it’s the Oxford English Dictionary). Thanks to some inspiration from my fellow bloggers, I’ve compiled a few of my favorite quotes for you to ponder over.
I expect comments with an analysis and evidence for your position (I kid!)
“It’s funny. All you have to do is say something nobody understands and they’ll do practically anything you want them to.” – The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger
“If music be the food of love, play on.” – Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare
“The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.” – The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare
“You buy furniture. You tell yourself, this is the last sofa I will ever need in my life. Buy the sofa, then for a couple years you’re satisfied that no matter what goes wrong, at least you’ve got your sofa issue handled. Then the right set of dishes. Then the perfect bed. The drapes. The rug. Then you’re trapped in your lovely nest, and the things you used to own, now they own you.” – Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
“Love is needing someone. Love is putting up with someone’s bad qualities because they somehow complete you.” – Just Listen by Sarah Dessen
“‘When you pull down yo’ britches, you look lak de change uh life.” – Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
“Making eye contact during rough sex is roughly the equivalent of trying to read Dostoyevsky on a rollercoaster.” How To Make Love Like A Porn Star by Jenna Jameson
If I were to keep going I’d probably have at least 50 quotes here from books that I’ve read over the years. I’m currently piling books on top of other books. Can you imagine how many noteworthy quotes there are in all of the books I own? Tons!
What are some of your favorite quotes from books? Why did you like them? What made them stay in your mind? Which ones of these do you like the best?
PS: Thank you for all of the wonderful congratulation messages. <3 Each one made me smile!

I used to have my own little notebook with all the quote that i mad eup myself, most of them are my own words of wisdom or about love and relationships.
My fave would be the last quote

Kudos on the awesome comment you left. Zombies!
English has always been my favorite subject and I’m really good at it. Anything Shakespeare is lovelovelove.
I love the Fight Club quote. In fact, I just posted my favorite Fight Club quote as part of the meme I’m doing

I keep a quote book! I am obsessed with collecting quotes. My bf makes fun of me every time I whip it out to enter a new one but I don’t care, I love it!

OED, huh? Bwahaha, I never heard it referred to in the form of an acronym before! I’m not too picky about what dictionaries I use, but I am extremely picky about what thesauruses I use.
My parents bought me a nice, shiny, brand speakin’ new Canadian Oxford Thesaurus for me for Christmas one year, which I was absolutely ecstatic about — Until I realised that an Oxford Thesaurus is nothing like a Roget’s Thesaurus. I felt pretty bad — I still do — Because I haven’t really utilised the Oxford since they got it for me. The format just doesn’t work for me!
As for your quotes, that’s quite a stellar collection of both classics and moderns, haha! Very entertaining to read indeed. x3;

I love that I’m familiar with many of these and the ones I had never heard of before definitely made me smile
I like this one by Oscar Wilde: “Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes.”

Haha, I love that one by Jenna Jameson. I actually read that book a few years ago, and surprisingly I loved it:)

Ahhh! I used to hate high school English because we’d always discuss one quote to death. And, I was never good at deciphering the deeper message from quotes and passages.
However, I did take a life writing class recently though, and we started pulling passages from books and discussing them and it wasn’t so bad. I guess the older you get, the more you appreciate literature.
[Reply]
Ah, discussing quotes. Pros and cons! Pro because I liked hearing the different interpretations, con because we’d analyse it that much it just became words put together, which didn’t make much sense. :’D I’m taking English next year anyway. <3
Hmm, I can’t really remember quotes from books (hehe) but there are a selection of funny ones I love from the Dresden Files series and a few from the Harry Potter series. Can’t remember which ones though. :’)

I love the quote from fight club. I’d never read it before, then while I was bored in work I found it in play form and read it and it was brilliant.
I can’t remember any off the top of my head, but I’ll keep a look out!

Congratulations on being a college graduate.
My favorite quote is “The bed is a bundle of paradoxes: we go to it with reluctance, yet we quit it with regret; we make up our minds every night to leave it early, but we make up our bodies every morning to keep it late.”
-Charles Caleb Colton

I’m liking that quote from The Merchant of Venice. It takes me back to high school when we tackled it. Good times, good times. As of late, the only books I’ve been collecting are R.A. Salvatore’s Legend of Drizzt series. Therefore, I will pull in a quote, well, a dialogue from one of Salvatore’s books:
Jarlaxle: Yes, this could be rather enjoyable.
Kimmurial: And profitable?
Jarlaxle: I cannot have one without the other.

I’m currently an unemployed marketing management graduate.. LOL we’re both unemployed..hahahaha but I’m taking a long break from school and stuff..
)) I used to compile quotes from the books i read.. I find a lot of quotes from Paolo Coelho books though but I find it hypocritical though.. easy to write but hard to do..
I love that quote from catcher in the rye.. I kinda miss reading that one though

I love those quotes! The Catcher in the Rye one is my favorite on the list. It’s soooo true!!!
Good luck finding jobs!! What levels can you teach at with your certifications/degree?

First of all, congratulations on your recent graduation! That’s wonderful and a fantastic achievement, but I know I’m not telling you anything new there.
Those are some great quotes you’ve got there. I particularly like this one:
“It’s funny. All you have to do is say something nobody understands and they’ll do practically anything you want them to.”
It’s very true though. It’s amazing the influence you can exert over people and the awe/respect they’ll show you if you say something completely confusing (and often complete BS) that goes over their heads. It’s surprisingly easy to convince people that you’re utterly brilliant if you can say something with enough confidence to make them think that you really know what you’re talking about, even if you don’t! I’ve even managed to get through essays on that technique…quite shocking, really!
All of my favourite quotes from books that I can think of off the top of my head are from the works of Oscar Wilde: “To define is to limit” from The Picture of Dorian Gray; “I can resist everything except temptation” from Lady Windemere’s Fan; and “To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance” from An Ideal Husband. There are many, many more of course, but I don’t want to clog your comments.
Wilde’s writings are an absolute goldmine of quotes.

I hated English class. I never understood the importance of some of those quotes in books that they made us read over and over again. I can’t think of any quotes from books that I particularly liked. I do, however, find a lot of quotes in songs that I think are pretty spectacular.
Of the quotes that you wrote here, none of them really had an impact on me. Some of them don’t make sense to me at all lol. English class makes me feel dumb.

It can be rare to find a professional person in whom you might have some confidence. In the world at present, nobody definitely cares about showing others exactly how in this subjecttopic. How blessed I am to have actually found a real wonderful site as this. It is people like you who really make a true difference these days through the ideas they write about.

Thanks for the publish. I have constantly seen that a majority of people are eager to lose weight simply because they wish to look slim plus attractive. Nonetheless, they do not often realize that there are many benefits for losing weight as well. Doctors insist that fat people have problems with a variety of diseases that can be directly attributed to their particular excess weight. The great thing is that people who sadly are overweight along with suffering from several diseases can reduce the severity of their own illnesses by losing weight. It is possible to see a steady but noted improvement in health when even a slight amount of weight-loss is reached.
