As an unemployed English teacher (this is what I’ve been calling myself as of now), I am obsessed with quotations and explaining them to death. I’m the teacher who will have you sit with three lines of Shakespeare and have the class discuss them for at least twenty minutes if not more. Yes, yes, I’m the teacher who will tell you that each word has relevance and will make you look up each word in the OED. (English majors, you’d better know and love the OED–for non-literary dorks it’s the Oxford English Dictionary). Thanks to some inspiration from my fellow bloggers, I’ve compiled a few of my favorite quotes for you to ponder over.

If I were to keep going I’d probably have at least 50 quotes here from books that I’ve read over the years. I’m currently piling books on top of other books. Can you imagine how many noteworthy quotes there are in all of the books I own? Tons!

OED, huh? Bwahaha, I never heard it referred to in the form of an acronym before! I’m not too picky about what dictionaries I use, but I am extremely picky about what thesauruses I use.
My parents bought me a nice, shiny, brand speakin’ new Canadian Oxford Thesaurus for me for Christmas one year, which I was absolutely ecstatic about — Until I realised that an Oxford Thesaurus is nothing like a Roget’s Thesaurus. I felt pretty bad — I still do — Because I haven’t really utilised the Oxford since they got it for me. The format just doesn’t work for me!
As for your quotes, that’s quite a stellar collection of both classics and moderns, haha! Very entertaining to read indeed. x3;

Ahhh! I used to hate high school English because we’d always discuss one quote to death. And, I was never good at deciphering the deeper message from quotes and passages.
However, I did take a life writing class recently though, and we started pulling passages from books and discussing them and it wasn’t so bad. I guess the older you get, the more you appreciate literature.

Ah, discussing quotes. Pros and cons! Pro because I liked hearing the different interpretations, con because we’d analyse it that much it just became words put together, which didn’t make much sense. :’D I’m taking English next year anyway. <3
Hmm, I can’t really remember quotes from books (hehe) but there are a selection of funny ones I love from the Dresden Files series and a few from the Harry Potter series. Can’t remember which ones though. :’)

I love the quote from fight club. I’d never read it before, then while I was bored in work I found it in play form and read it and it was brilliant.

I’m liking that quote from The Merchant of Venice. It takes me back to high school when we tackled it. Good times, good times. As of late, the only books I’ve been collecting are R.A. Salvatore’s Legend of Drizzt series. Therefore, I will pull in a quote, well, a dialogue from one of Salvatore’s books:

)) I used to compile quotes from the books i read.. I find a lot of quotes from Paolo Coelho books though but I find it hypocritical though.. easy to write but hard to do..

First of all, congratulations on your recent graduation! That’s wonderful and a fantastic achievement, but I know I’m not telling you anything new there.
Those are some great quotes you’ve got there. I particularly like this one:
“It’s funny. All you have to do is say something nobody understands and they’ll do practically anything you want them to.”
It’s very true though. It’s amazing the influence you can exert over people and the awe/respect they’ll show you if you say something completely confusing (and often complete BS) that goes over their heads. It’s surprisingly easy to convince people that you’re utterly brilliant if you can say something with enough confidence to make them think that you really know what you’re talking about, even if you don’t! I’ve even managed to get through essays on that technique…quite shocking, really!
All of my favourite quotes from books that I can think of off the top of my head are from the works of Oscar Wilde: “To define is to limit” from The Picture of Dorian Gray; “I can resist everything except temptation” from Lady Windemere’s Fan; and “To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance” from An Ideal Husband. There are many, many more of course, but I don’t want to clog your comments.
Wilde’s writings are an absolute goldmine of quotes.

I hated English class. I never understood the importance of some of those quotes in books that they made us read over and over again. I can’t think of any quotes from books that I particularly liked. I do, however, find a lot of quotes in songs that I think are pretty spectacular.
Of the quotes that you wrote here, none of them really had an impact on me. Some of them don’t make sense to me at all lol. English class makes me feel dumb.
