Current Obsession: Podcasts

Yeah, yeah, they aren’t new. I know. I’ve been recently needing to do something productive while cosleeping and/or driving to and from work. While listening to Five Finger Death Punch gets me in the mood to teach, sometimes I want to feel cultured and fancy. I actually started listening to podcasts whenever I’d drive with Keith somewhere it I thought they were annoying and pretentious…until I went back to work and felt sorry for myself as a working mom.

Enter “The Longest Shortest Time” with host Hillary Frank. It was a podcast all about mommyhood and damn, did it feel GREAT to have some other people who were feeling the same as me! I became obsessed. There were other people like me who sat up wondering what happened to their old life? There were people struggling with the return back to work? And, dare I say, other babies who were afraid of their own fathers? Suddenly, my ride to work got a less metal and more mommy.

Feeling like having a good old cry? Story Corps will help you out there. My personal favorites are  “Miss Devine,” and “Danny and Annie.” I use them in my classroom all the time now and it’s great having discussions with the kids about what makes a good story. It also reminds me that middle schoolers do, in fact, have feelings. Most of the stories are an hour or less which makes for a nice commute, or a good listen while you’re cosleeping with your adorable baby and dog. Wait…that’s only me? Ok…

FINALLY. I saved the best for last. The three men who I may or may not have a crush on, Ben Kissel, Marcus Parks, and Henry Zebrowski (love your beard), of “The Last Podcast on the Left” which covers all things horror, weird, and otherwise unfit to speak about during polite conversation. I used to be really into horror movies. I loved them. Now? They’re child’s play compared to what these guys talk about. The stories of murderers, crazies, and sadists makes “The Human Centipede” look like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Trust me, there is no way you’ll be able to turn this one off. Might I suggest listening to their 50th episode containing spooky stories of ghouls and ghosts? I’d also suggest “The Enfield Haunting” for those of you still in love with “The Conjuring” franchise.

What did I do with all of my time before this? Naptime just got so much cooler!

  1. I’ve never really been into Podcasts, but that could be blamed on not finding interesting ones for me to listen to. Thank you for sharing your favorites. I’ll have to check them out some time. ๐Ÿ™‚
