Current Obsessions: Mom Version

It’s been a little over 5 months since the tornado known as Leo has entered into my life. And wow! I’m actually sitting at a computer in something other than pajamas (going back to work makes you feel good about wearing real clothes again), and without someone crying for me. Despite being a Mom now, I’ve got some sweet new obsessions (and some old ones that have returned), to tell you all about! And because I’m a Mom who lives under a rock now, tell me what I should be loving!

***Just want to let you know I started writing this post in March and now it’s almost May…

  • LulaRoe: Despite the claims that their leggings rip like wet TP, I’m digging these bad boys. They feel so silky soft and make me look streamlined with their yoga waistband.
  • Coconut oil: for my baby, boobs, dog, husband, and just about everything else.
  • Lactation cookies: homemade or Booby Boons (peep my Instagram over there—->) these are delicious and healthy!
  • Pedicures: because my feet were BUSTED since November. And yes, it took me about 3 months to cut my nails.

I’d make this longer, but you and I both know I have a little one yelling at me to pay attention to him, dammit! What are you into lately?

Welcome Leo Lucius!

I’ve been working towards this post for a long time now, because, well, I’m the mother of a newborn! Gone are the days of hours wasted online. Now, my days are spent snuggling with an adorable little human, nursing 24/7, and paying bills and texting with one hand. I’m also working on mastering the art of babywearing. So, what happened on the day that the Curls.nu family expanded plus one? It’s a story for sure!

Dear Leo,

You came into the world weighing 8 lbs, 12 oz and at 21 inches long on November 21, 2016 at exactly 2 p.m. I couldn’t wait to meet you, and didn’t know you were a Leo until you arrived. Before you came, Daddy and I got your nursery ready and had our bag packed. I knew you were going to come early! I left work on a Friday and went into labor early on Monday morning. Before that, I managed to grocery shop, go see “Fantastic Beasts” with Daddy and Grandpa, clean the bedsheets, and take a hot shower before I knew it was time to call the doctor. They didn’t think I was ready, but I knew better. You were going to make a grand entrance regardless of the fact that I was a “first time mom” and you weren’t “due” until December 1. When we got to the doctor, one of my favorite midwives told me I was already at 8 c.m. She said, “You’ll be holding your baby within two hours, MAX!”

Boy did that kick things into high gear. We made our way to the hospital and I walked in like a champ. Amanda, my other favorite midwife was there and ready. For a while, I swam in the tub and then it was time to start pushing. Holding on to a towel and using a birthing bar I thought about how badly I wanted to meet you and pulled ALL of my hypnobirthing knowledge. Your little shoulder got stuck under my pelvic bone and Amanda turned you around and out you came into the world. When they wrapped you like a little burrito and placed you on my chest I didn’t know what to say. I felt like I had known you forever.

Now, we’re going on yet another adventure together. I’m learning to read what you want and need, and you’re learning how to live in a very different world. Two months have flown by and I can’t believe that I get to hang out with you each day and call myself your Mama! I might not be perfect at this parent thing yet, but I’ll do everything within my power to make sure you’re happy, healthy, and safe.

Love always,

Mama

Target Made to Matter Back to School Collection

Target has long been one of the places I go to snag a lot of my cruelty free goods and just about everything else I could possibly imagine needing. Their Made to Matter Line features cruelty free, safe, sustainable, and organic products for the home which I’m completely obsessed with! A lot of my favorite items like Mrs. Meyer’s, Annie’s, and Pacifica were in the Made to Matter line, but I was so excited to see more brands that I use on a daily basis and some new ones too! I’ll be talking about all of these amazing products, but here’s just a brief look at what was inside their back to school bag (which I”ll be using to tote things to and from school!)

Bitsy’s Brainfood Smart Crackers in Chia Veggie – $3.99 – I love anything cheddar! Cheese flavored snacks are my weakness, but these babies have low sugar, 1/2 a serving of veggies, and are made in a nut-free facility. These would be excellent to have on hand to pacify a hungry 8th grader if necessary.

Annie’s Organic Berry Patch Fruit Snacks – $3.45 per box – When I saw Berry Patch snacks in my bag I jumped for joy! These are a favorite in my house. These fruit snacks are soft and flavorful and don’t have any of the nasties that commercial fruit snacks have. I love throwing these in my purse or in a lunch box for a quick snack throughout the day.

Mrs. Meyer’s Lemon Verbena Vinegar Gel – $3.99 – MM was always a brand I loved having in my home. I’ve never tried the Vinegar Gel before and am looking forward to using this in my bathroom and around the house. I’m obsessed with cleaning and am looking forward to using this Made to Matter item. Vinegar is a very effective cleanser, but having it premixed will just made it more convenient for quick clean-ups too.

Shea Moisture Peace Rose Shampoo & Conditioner – $10.99 – Yet another Curls.nu favorite! I’ve never tried this Shampoo and Conditioner, but the scent is amazing. I’ll look forward to letting my curls experience this moisturizing treatment.

Babyganics Moisturizing Daily Lotion – $7.29 – Babyganics is a brand that is on my registry. I’m a big fan of their wipes and can only imagine their lotions will be just as great.

Pacifica Beauty Dream Big Mascara – $15.99 – If you’ve been reading my blog for long enough you KNOW Pacifica is my JAM!

Justin’s PB + Banana Chips – $1.99 – It is so hard sometimes to grab quick, easy snacks! I’ll be throwing these in my lunchbag throughout the week for quick energy and to beat the 3 p.m. slump.

Honest Company Organic Healing Balm – $12.95 – Since I’ll be meeting baby in a few short months, I’m super excited to try the Honest Company healing balm. I will NOT be using big brands that have toxins and additives in them on my baby love, so sampling this balm beforehand will be great.

Honest Company Orange Hand Sanitizing Spray – $2.98 – Likewise, 8th graders are germy freaks. This hand sanitizer will have a happy little place in my desk drawer for easy cleaning.

Happy Family Super Smart Pouch in Berry & Beet – $1.60 – Of course, I’m going to want my little one to have lots of healthy snack choices and Target Made to Matter makes that really easy. These pouches are perfect for tiny hands and offer fun flavors like the strawberry and beet I received!

Seventh Generation Laundry Packs – $12.99 – I love everything I’ve tried by SG, but have always been curious about laundry packs. I love the idea of less mess when it comes to pouring detergent and will definitely let you know how these work out.

Method Pumpkin Clove Gel Handwash – $3.49 – It’s Fall, I live in New England, and it’s almost time for pumpkin flavored everything. So, why not add that flavor in the kitchen or bathroom? This Pumpkin Clove hand gel smells AMAZING.

Yes to Carrots Coconut Paper Mask – $2.99 – Paper masks are all the rage right now because they’re quick, easy, and effective (a triple win, no?) Yes to Coconut provides skin with some extra moisture and a lasting scent of summer.

Tom’s of Maine Whitening Toothpaste – $4.99 – My dentist told me my teeth look better than ever. When I told her I switched to Tom’s she couldn’t believe it. A natural toothpaste?? I’ve tried their total care and look forward to brightening my smile in time for picture day.

Tom’s of Maine Naturally Dry Antiperspirant – 4.49 – This sultry men’s scent of Tom’s is perfect for my husband who works outside 24/7. Their Naturally Dry formula keeps everything smooth, comfy, and smelling great.

Suja Juice Coupons – Juices Retail at $2.99 – Suja Juices now offers probiotic waters and I’ll get to choose my flavor. Updates soon to some as my baby bump can always use some extra probiotics.

Nature’s Path EnviroKids Granola Bar – $4.99/box of 6 – Nature’s Path Envirokids is not just for kids. I am obsessed with their chocolate chip, nut free, vegetarian flavor.

Stay tuned as I share my faves with you within the coming weeks and happy back to school from Curls.nu!

Summer & Fall 2016 Reading List

summer reading

Just because August is halfway over and teachers like myself will be heading back to work doesn’t mean that I’ll stop reading. The next few months are going to be very busy for me in terms of preparing for baby’s arrival, a new school year, and the holiday season. But, I find that it’s so important for me to take the time to read and reflect. I’ve been focusing a lot on new Young Adult Literature, but I’ve also been reading a few pregnancy books to help empower myself come December. What’s on your current list?

  • Sherman Alexie – The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian: This is a re-read for me because I ended up teaching it in a summer program. This book is absolutely hysterical, heartbreaking, and happy all in one crazy tornado of Rez Life mixed with spunky cartoons. We had some great discussions about this book, what it means to be a Native American, and what stepping outside the box to achieve your dreams means for some people. This is also one of the few books I read that has a male protagonist! Go me!
  • J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany & Jack Thorne – Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: This is a no brainer. If you know me, you know that I actually live in the HP Universe and teach part-time at Hogwarts on the weekends. I really dig the play format and would love to do something with this in the classroom. Because what kid doesn’t want to act? I won’t spoil anything though, I know many are still reading!
  • Rainbow Rowell – Eleanor & Park: I heard this is just charming. I’m looking forward to reading it!
  • Jojo Moyes – Me Before You: Because the whole Internet is crying and I want to know why.
  • Garth Stein – A Sudden Light: I fell in love with The Art of Racing in the Rain. Whenever that happens I try out another book by the same author.
  • Every pregnancy book ever: I’m currently rocking Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy which is…well…cute. And, Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth because if I had more gall I’d totally go to the farm to have the baby, haha. I love how empowering the stories are and am channeling that energy so I can put it to good use come December (or November…)

Will I read more? You bet! But these are my priority books for now. Happy reading!

Cool Cruelty Free Kid Must-Haves

cruelty free kid

I’ve already started working on my baby registry despite the fact that I’m not having a shower before baby arrives. If people want to give a gift, I’m open to it (and extremely grateful), but I’m looking toward having a Christening/Meet the Baby party afterwards! Obviously, we’re having a cruelty free kid. I want to make sure I’m using safe, nontoxic, and animal friendly products on my baby and usually those three requirements come together in one package. Moms like Sunny and Janine have shown me that living a safe, and chemical free lifestyle can be very doable even with another person to “manage.” Through Vegan Cuts and other cruelty free boxes, I’ve gotten some great previews of cruelty free kid items. Here are my favorites that I’ll be sharing with our Little One come December.

Of course, I’m thinking about onesies, diapers, and all of the equipment I’ll need, but I’ve been thinking of some fun items too! Cruelty free kid items are not hard to find, and with a little research you can raise your very own nontoxic crunchy granola muncher. Knowing, personally, that I’ll be using safe products on my little one gives me peace of mine. Here are some of the non-essentials I wouldn’t mind if someone got me (in triplicate, haha).

First up? The Ickle Baby Bot Bath Bomb (say that three times fast, I’ll wait). I’ve been a longtime lover of all things Lush, and their baby products are no exception. Our nephew loved this bath bomb and I loved the gentle lavender EO which is perfect for winding down at the end of the day…for Momma, Daddy, and Baby (and probably the dog, too).

Original Sprout is a brand I came to know through the Vegan Cuts Beauty box (and loved that there were cruelty free kid options in it, too!) Moms I’ve spoken to said that multi-tasking products are amazing. OS offers this Hair and Body Babywash that takes care of it all. After doing some research, it seems like bath-time is so important…not just for cleanliness but for bonding! Rosemary, Basil, and Aloe smooth skin while soothing. I used this myself during a very hot, trying summer for my skin and it cured any woes I had. And, the gentle scent is not overpowering!

Earth Mama Angel Baby is a brand I’ve been researching on my own more so for post-partum products. However, when I stumbled upon their bottom balm I knew I had to make sure to put it on my list. When I was a kid we used A+D or Desitin. But, I wasn’t wild about the oils and ingredients (not then…now, haha). I also like that I can use this EO blend on bug bites, diaper rash, or even scratches and minor cuts.

The next two must-haves aren’t really for my future cruelty free kid, but for me. The Uncommon Goods Cotton Teether Crate is just cute as all hell. And, the Edible Veggie Finger Paints by Wee Can Too are right up my husband’s alley for fun Daddy and Baby art time.

Crunchy mommas, what else should I be putting on my cruelty free kid list?
