I can still remember Marsadie’s article on how to score freebies and samples from department store makeup counters. The article was great, and it was interesting to read. I never knew, before reading her article, that it was possible to score freebies and samples, which only benefits fellow beauty junkies like myself.
While back to school shopping I decided to stop in Sephora to redeem by birthday gift for being a Beauty Insider. Sephora’s beauty insider program is a rewards system in which you earn points for your purchases. I knew that you get a free birthday gift, but I didn’t know I would walk out of the store with two freebies!
The birthday gift was a bubble bath/shower gel: Vanilla Cupcake. It has hints of toasted almond, honey, and buttermilk as well. There’s a bit of sparkle in the gel which left my skin feeling great and smelling great. I love products with Almond Oil (I rave about my Creme Ribbons by Olay!), and vanilla is such a light and delicious scent without being overpowering. The bottle even says, “Happy Birthday Beautiful!”
I also received a sample sized Bare Minerals SPF 15 Foundation with a cute little application brush. I haven’t tried the product yet, but the sample size fits nicely in my cosmetic bag (also a freebie), and would be great to keep on me for face touch ups at school. Has anyone used Bare Minerals before? I’d love to hear some opinions. I haven’t heard anything negative from fellow bloggers, but I’d love to learn some more, especially with the mineral makeup trend at full height.
Finally, I scored a freebie at Victoria’s Secret as well. With any PINK purchase you receive a free cosmetic bag in either pink, green, or blue. If you’re a Glamour reader check your pages, as the coupon comes in September’s issue! I chose pink and can’t wait to fill it for school in two weeks.
Let’s face it, running on the treadmill 3-4 times a week for 45 minutes gets boring. We all know this. While walking or running outside or on a track can give you a change of scenery, working out needs to be fun or else why do it? Summer is a great way to work out, and if it’s too hot there are video games that allow you to burn calories in a fun way with friends or family. And let’s not forget swimming and working out in the water. Here’s some fun ways I break the habit of the treadmill and what I think of the workout games.
There are some great ways to workout if you have a pool at your home, at your apartment, or in your town. Making a whirlpool (by yourself is a great workout!!) is a wonderful leg and arm workout. Run around the outside of the pool 10-15 times and try and swim the opposite way. I try and to 3-4 run arounds against the current. This will work your quads, and lower abs. You really feel the burn! It might sound easy to do, but anyone who has tried running in the water knows there’s a stronger resistance to work against. Doing this 2-3 times a week I’ve noticed a difference in my legs and lower abs! And plus, the water keeps you cool and allows you to work a little harder.
To the left you can see a photo of the Wii Fit balance board, your main companion when playing Wii Fit for Nintendo. This board guides you through a body test, BMI, Fit Age, and goal process before you begin working out. Yoga, cardio, strength, and balance are the games you can play complete with calorie and fat burning, and a way to weigh yourself. As you lose weight, your character gets smaller along with you. The Hula Hoop game is super for abs and hips (feels like doing 100 crunches in 4 different ways when you’re done), and the Yoga workouts are comparable to going to a yoga class. This is certainly a great way for friends to workout together or family members to get fit together in a fun way.
Do you think it’s a good idea to work out using a video game?
Can it be a good thing to add to a normal workout routine?
I think in our tech age, it’s a great way to help kids have fun working out as well as adults who may not be able to make it to a gym every day, or may not have the endurance to run on a treadmill. If you’re in doubt? My doctor bought one for her kids!
I leave for Rhode Island on Saturday for a week of vacation with Keith and my family. My Aunt gets a house right on the water (we go to the same one each year), and it’s absolutely beautiful. Being away for a week means extra packing, and making sure that I pack the right things. When you go to the beach for a week, or on any summery vacation for a week here are some of my essentials besides a week’s worth of clothes and regular purse essentials (like wallet and cellphone).
More than one bathing suit: In my opinion, there’s bathing suits for laying out, and then there’s bathing suits for swimming. A string bikini just simply can’t withstand big waves and boogie boarding. I always bring more than one. If you’re a two piece girl, try getting one with thicker straps so there’s no risk losing your bottom or top when you get crashed with a wave. I’ll be wearing a bikini this summer (but bringing one of my sexy VS short tankinis for boogie boarding).
SPF: You can still get tan while protecting your skin. Hawaiian Tropic makes a great tanning lotion with an SPF of 6 for sun worshipers, but you can also invest in a spray on sunscreen which I absolutely love. It’s light and does the job, and trust me, YOU WILL GET TAN!
Easy makeup/hair care: I pack light for the beach with my makeup and haircare. If you have longer curly hair like me bring a widetooth comb to get tangles out. And a plus! The saltwater and sun will give you natural high lights and beachy looking waves. Who said mother nature can’t help you out? As for makeup, I also pack light. I’ll have my bronzer to sweep on lightly, lip gloss, and mascara. Easy makeup for an easy vacation. Plus you don’t have to worry about eyeliner smudges and foundation meltdown. Getting tan means you can get away with less makeup, and also helps to clear your skin.
Swim coverup’s that double as dresses: It’s simple as that, go from the beach to the bar in minutes. Victoria’s Secret has amazing summer dresses that are cute and fun. Check out the PINK line. I picked up a navy blue dress which I hope to be wearing out when we hit the beach bars.
What are some of your beach essentials? Or vacation essentials?
